| Soklim | |
| Before coming to COLT, Soklim lived in Posal province, about 100 km from Phnom-Penh, with her mother, father and brother Sokly. Before coming to COLT Soklim was in 1st Grade, but did not learn any English, now she is in 2nd Grade and is learning English. Her parents did not have enough money to care for Soklim or Solky and they are both now in COLT. Her parents visit infrequently but she and her brother still miss their parents. She enjoys school, her favorite subjects being Math, Social Studies, Khmer, and English. She would like to be a teacher when she grows up. She enjoys living at COLT because it gives her a chance to learn. She is extremely talkative and has many friends at COLT. At times, like any 7 year old, she can be naughty and blames the staff of COLT for her behavior, but she is very active and loves to skip with the other children. |
| Channy | |
| Before Channy came to COLT in 2006 she lived with her mother and two brothers. Channy was born in 1991. After her father died her mother could not afford to keep her so she was taken in by the staff of COLT. Channy misses her mother a lot and gets to see her 2-3 times a year. Her brothers who are older, still live by the railroad tracks and Channy sometimes sees them as well. Before coming to COLT Channy had only a 2nd Grade education. She does not go to school now because the staff feels she has "a brain problem" and is thought to be mentally handicapped. She will be evaluated soon as to her mental capacity by a physician. She finds it difficult to remember things and her thought processes are very slow. She stays inside COLT all the time now, helping with cleaning and cooking. Recently she started learning to sew. She is slow but is taking interest in it. Channy is a lively and talkative 17 year old and relates well to the other children and sometimes gets into fights, but we believe she doesn't know her own strength. |
